Whether it’s pair of Balmain jeans or some jaw dropping Eres lingerie, when we buy well, we want to buy once. We want these luxury items to stand the test of time, and not disintegrate into frayed strands after just a few washes … but how can we make sure that our clothing stays looking its very best for longer?
If you want to prolong the life of your luxury clothing, then take a look at your laundry techniques and see if there’s any room for improvement. Unfortunately, many of us are washing our clothes in the wrong way, and causing them to become old before their time. If you can’t confidently answer the question ‘how often should you wash a bra?’, or ‘what temperature should you wash jeans at?’, then we’ve got all the information you need.
Here are some excellent — and easy — ways to make your clothes last longer.
How often should you wash a bra and other clothing?
Contrary to popular belief, you really don’t need to wash your clothes after just one wear. Well, at least not always.
How often should you wash a bra, a pair of jeans, and other items of clothing all depends on the level of use they have received and the type of fabric they are made from. While there’s no hard and fast rule, there are some recommendations you can follow and simply checking your clothing for stains or smells before washing them can help you assess if it’s time for a clean or if you’d be better to wait.
For bras, it’s recommended that you wash them after every 3 or 4 wears. Bras shouldn’t be washed too frequently because overwashing could cause the elastic to weaken, leaving you feeling a little droopy! However, they do need to be washed regularly to remove sweat smells and to help keep them clean and fresh.
For designer jeans, some people claim that they don’t need to be washed at all! Even the CEO of Levi’s, Chip Bergh, states that ‘a good pair of denim doesn’t really need to be washed in the washing machine except for very infrequently or rarely’. This is because the colours can fade, and the material can weaken so only wash your jeans when absolutely necessary.
What temperature should you wash your clothes at?
Looking after your clothes isn’t just about asking how often should you wash a bra or a pair of jeans, it’s also about knowing what temperature you should wash your clothes at, and what method to use.
Most clothes don’t need to be washed at high temperatures of 60 degrees. In fact, high heats can set some stains into the fabric instead of removing them. Instead, a 30 degree wash will often do the trick. Not only is this better for your clothes, but it’s better for the environment, too, helping you to become more ‘green’.
Of course, there are occasions when a higher temperature is necessary. Say you’ve spent the morning on your pull up bars building up those muscles and you’ve worked up quite a sweat. A higher temperature can be good for getting rid of any bacteria, but keep these hot washes to a minimum — only when necessary. If in doubt, always check the care label of your garment to make sure it’s safe to wash at that temperature and follow any other washing advice – such as having it dry cleaned if required.
Just like new
Even with the best care, we can’t keep our clothes looking new forever. However, we can keep our jeans and lingerie looking newer for longer by making sure we’re using the best washing techniques.
By knowing all the important information, like how often should you wash a bra, and what temperature to wash it at, you can help to ensure that your luxury items maintain their luxurious look and feel for longer.
